The final step in the immigration process. Granting of Canadian citizenship confers the right to vote, carry a Canadian passport, and permanently reside in Canada without renewal of status.
Like applying for permanent residency, those who wish to become citizens of Canada must first submit an application to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Those who satisfy the qualifying requirements will next be asked to take and pass the citizenship exam. For those applying, IRCC provides a study guide to assist them score well on the 30-minute exam. Applicants must also prove their language proficiency and physical presence in Canada.
Applicants must have met their personal income tax filing obligations in three tax years that are fully or partially within the five years immediately before applying.
Applicants between the ages of 18 and 54 must demonstrate adequate knowledge of one of the official languages of Canada (English or French).
